This fall, the Orangeville & Area Small Business Enterprise Centre (SBEC) will be offering a series of business development workshops and events. These excellent learning opportunities offer support, guidance, resources, and information for entrepreneurs who want to start a business or owners who want to enhance their operations. Each free or low-cost session is delivered by experts in their fields and is conveniently located in Orangeville, Shelburne or Grand Valley. Sessions include:
Starting a Small Business for Newcomers (Shelburne) Sept. 19, 10 a.m. – Noon.
Starting a new business venture is a lot of work for anyone but understanding the small business environment as a newcomer can have additional challenges. In this session, Ivan Todorovski from the Newcomer Centre of Peel will explain the necessary steps involved in starting a small business in Ontario. Topics covered will include assessing your entrepreneurial readiness, the various forms of business ownership, government regulations, the importance of a business plan, forecasting cash flow, identifying your target market, and when and why to register for HST. Cost: $15
Six-Step Sales Process (Live online webinar) Oct. 3, 2 – 4 p.m.
This live, two-hour webinar session will be led by David Cohen of the David Cohen Group. David will detail the sales process and how to approach each step, from customer attraction to lead generation to the sale. Participants may join the webinar from their own locations or join in from the SBEC office at 200 Lakeview Court (Upper Level) in Orangeville. Cost: $15
Succession Planning Oct. 9, 7 – 9 p.m.
Planning for business succession ahead of time can help entrepreneurs evaluate options at their own pace and ensure the transition process goes smoothly. Succession planning can also help you to find a buyer, set up financing, ensure optimal tax treatment, and lay a foundation for years of continued success. Nancy Claridge, lawyer with Carters Professional Corporation, will provide expert advice on the process of succession planning and help entrepreneurs plan for a successful transition. Cost: $15
Digital Marketing: Principles & Power in an ever-changing landscape Oct. 17, 9 a.m. – Noon.
Your online presence is a powerful, but complex way to market your business. The right digital marketing strategy could lead to impressive results, but with so many tools and tactics to consider, it may be difficult to know where to start. Sarid Layton, Business Development Manager at Treefrog Inc., will help you develop and execute an effective plan for your business. This extensive, interactive session will discuss ways to improve your search rankings, enhance your social media results, create effective content marketing, and develop successful email marketing campaigns. Branding your Small Business Oct. 24, 1:30 – 4:30 p.m.
A compelling business brand helps a company stand out in a crowded marketplace. It can increase sales, enhance profits and promote customer loyalty. In this engaging session, Jed Phillips, owner of Concept Marketing and Signs, will show participants how to identify their business brand and create its visual identity. He will explain how customers attach meaning to a brand and how it can help to improve the company’s long-term health and profitability. Cost: $15
Small Business Financials Oct. 30, 9 a.m. – Noon.
Understanding your company’s financial statements is fundamental for business success, but often business owners find themselves baffled by income statements, balance sheets and cash flow forecasts. Melissa Vinden of RLB Accounting will teach participants how to create and analyze the financial statements and forecasts that every business needs for proper management. Melissa will share tips on how to improve business numbers and explain the ratios that owners should be monitoring for business success. Cost: $15
2019 Economic Outlook Breakfast Nov. 5, 7:30 – 9:30 a.m.
In partnership with TD Bank Group, the Town of Orangeville hosts its annual networking breakfast featuring a keynote address by James Marple, Director and Senior Economist at TD. James will provide an analysis of the Canadian economy and financial markets and offer insights on economic and financial developments pertinent to the local economy. Cost: $25
Employment Standards and Workplace Health and Safety Dec. 5, 1 – 3:00 p.m.
As part of the Ministry of Labour (MOL)’s ongoing commitment to provide compliance support for small business, ministry representatives will provide an overview of the Employment Standards Act (ESA) and Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). Delivered by subject matter experts from MOL’s employment standards and occupational health and safety programs, the session will cover key topics including hours of work, public holidays, leaves of absence, getting help making the workplace safe, information regarding injury reporting, inspector visits, and more.
