Kushindokai Karate and Fitness held their sixth annual Kick-a-Thon charity fundraiser on June 8, raising $7,750 for Dufferin Child & Family Services (DCAFS) and its Dufferin Children’s Fund.
Over the 2 1/2- hour event 51 students and instructors performed 102,083 kicks.
“Today was a huge success. It was such a high-energy event and the students and families in attendance had a great time,” says owner and head instructor Sensei Michael Fisher. “Karate is really about improving yourself as a person, so being able to use the skills that we practice here day in and day out to help give back to the local community is an important part of that process. We have such an amazing group of students and families here at Kushindokai who really got engaged and motivated to help out anyway they could. I am proud to be part of such a wonderful group of people.”
Sensei Michael presented the cheque to Jennifer Moore, Executive Director of DCAFS, at the DCAFS headquarters. Over the six years holding this event Kushindokai has now raised over $41,000 for the Dufferin Children’s Fund.
“We are so very pleased and honoured to have received this significant donation from Kushindokai Karate and Fitness,” says Jennifer Moore, Executive Director of DCAFS. “Money donated to the Dufferin Children’s Fund is used to support local children, youth and families receiving service from DCAFS in the areas of youth futures, child & youth development and health & wellness.
The funds raised through this initiative will make a significant difference in our community – whether it be through supporting post-secondary education, paying for therapeutic interventions such as art therapy, purchasing special needs assistive devices or sending someone to camp for example – the generosity of those who supported this initiative will hold significant meaning for people in our community.”
Sensei Michael also expressed his gratitude to the local community sponsors that helped out with generous drinks, food, and prize donations for the event.
