Undefeated local boxer competing for welterweight title

Orangeville boxer, Josh Wagner, will have the biggest fight of his career on September 9, when he steps into the ring to face Jorge Perez Sanchez for the International Boxing Association Intercontinental Welterweight Title.

The title is currently vacant.

As an undefeated boxer, Wagner’s record sits at 12-0. His last fight on July 7 at East Bayfield Arena in Barrie was a win and resulted in an ‘RTD’ (boxing terminology for when a fighter does not come out to fight when the bell rings to start the next round).

His opponent in the upcoming title fight, Jorge Perez Sanchez, is a 34 year-old fighting out of Tlalnepantla, Mexico.

Sanchez has a 13-2 record with one KO.

The fight will be the main event on the card for the night.

It is scheduled to be a ten-round bout.

“This is going to be my hardest fight to date for sure,” Wagner said. “It’s my first main event. It will live on DAZN, a world-wide sports platform so people all over the Canada, the UK, and the U.S. will able to watch it. I’ve fought eight rounds before – I’ve done two eight round fights. The way I train is, we make sure we are ready for 12 rounds. I’m training six days a week with one rest day. My morning sessions are the most vigorous – those are the strength and conditioning sessions. My night sessions are the boxing sessions.”

Wagner continued, “We’re training for a world title so we’re ready for twelve rounds. I listen to my coach – whatever he tells me, I do. I trust him and put my faith in him and it usually comes together well – it’s been working out so far.”

Josh’s opponent is the same height and has the same reach so they will need some real skills to get an edge in this bout.

Josh’s brother Ryan Wagner, himself a former professional boxer, is also his manager. He is predicting a really good show and some serious skills in the ring.

“This will be the main even at the CAA Centre in Brampton,” Ryan said. “Josh will be fighting a very skilled opponent named Jorge Perez. He has fought some very tough opponents himself and will be a very good test for Josh.

Ryan continued, “Josh has been training very hard, is working with Steve Bailey, a very highly renowned trainer. Josh is well on his way to stardom in the boxing world, and it’s only a matter of time before he is getting that opportunity for a world title shot. He is ready for anyone and these are steps up the ladder. He’s an Orangeville boy, born and raised and ready to put Orangeville on the map. United Boxing Promotions puts on one heck of a show at the CAA Centre and Josh would love to have the whole town out to support him.”

The bout will take place on Friday, September 9, at the CAA Centre in Brampton.
