Local dirt bike, ATV  riders warned

The Orangeville Police Service is reaching out to all dirt bike and all-terrain vehicle riders in the Orangeville area to help spread the message that use of the former “pits” on Veterans Way is strictly prohibited.

Officers continue to respond to numerous noise complaints from residents in the area of the former gravel pit land.

Police are asking for cooperation from members of the public to respect the fact that the land is private property and not for public use.

“Officers will continue to enforce the laws under the Trespass to Property Act, Highway Traffic Act, Off-Road Vehicles Act, Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, Town of Orangeville By-Laws, and Criminal Code of Canada,” the OPS said in a news release. “Individuals found to be in contravention of the laws will be charged accordingly.”

If caught on the roadway or operating a dirt bike or all-terrain vehicle in the pits off of Veteran’s Way, riders will be liable to the following partial list of charges:

• respassing – Enter Premises When Entry Prohibited

• respassing – Fail to Leave Premises When Directed

• perate Motor Vehicle- No Insurance

• rive Motor Vehicle- No Licence

• rive Motor Vehicle- No Permit

• ail to Stop for Police

• ail to Wear Proper Helmet

Police are also concerned with riders using roadways to travel to and from the land.

Dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles need to be licensed, insured and in safe operating condition. Riders also need to possess the appropriate classification of driver’s license to lawfully operate the vehicles.

Parents are asked to educate their children of these facts and to not permit them to ride their dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles on the roadway or in the local gravel pits.

Concerned residents who know of people who use the land to ride their dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles are encouraged to report them to the Orangeville Police Service directly at 519-941-2522 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222- TIPS (8477) or online at www.crimestopperssdm.com.
