The Island Lake Rowing Club (ILRC) had success at two regattas they attended recently. Club members competed at CORA in London, Ontario on Saturday, July 9, and at the Ontario Master Championships in Welland, Ontario on Sunday, July 10.
On Saturday, ILRC youth competed in London facing rain and high winds of up to 30 km/hr. Rowers, Paige Burns and Clare Hearns finished their U19 singles event when organizers shortened the 2000m course to a 750m course due to high winds.
ILRC athletes not only had an opportunity to compete in tough conditions, they were able to to watch some of the best crews in Canada compete in preparation for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Canada’s women’s eight and quad crews, lightweight mens four and quad crews, and para women’s pair used the regatta as a training opportunity.
Emily and Paige Curtis won bronze in the U19 Women’s lightweight double. This is the second bronze the twins have collected this season.
On Sunday, July 10, was another successful day for the ILRC crews as powerhouse pair Chris and Mike Huet competed in the Ontario Masters Championships.
Chris Huet started off the day iwth a bronze finish in the women’s single event, then topped up her results with a gold in the women’s double. Mike Huet won his first ever individual medal in the men’s single event.
The Huets topped off their individual accomplishments with a win in the mixed doubles event.
