The Orangeville Hawks hosted a mini-tournament for U14 girls teams in the gym at Orangeville District Secondary School on Saturday, January 19.

The result of the games will count toward team rankings in the province.

The Hawks first game of the day resulted in a loss to Newmarket.

When the Hawks returned for their second match of the day against the Centre Wellington Celtics they were in good form and had a lot of scoring success and had good defensive posturing.

The Orangeville team was leading 26 – 9 at the half.

They stretched that lead to 39 – 11 at the end of the third quarter.

In the final quarter the Hawks finished off with some aggressive moves and ended the game with 54-16 win.

“We ran a few plays and got comfortable with it,” said Hawks forward Taya Williamson after the game. “We passed, we shot, and included everybody on the court. We helped each other on defence and worked on keeping the ball way from the net and keeping them out of the key.”

Most of the Hawks players have a fair bit of experience on the court having been with the basketball club for several years.

“Our first game today was the challenge,” said Hawks head coach Greg Verner. “They were a really good team. We wanted to rise to that challenge, but we didn’t do that and had a loss. The Fergus team (Centre Wellington) has just put their team together this year. Our team is more

experienced. This group of girls has been together since they were eight years old with a few changes so they pretty well know what they are supposed to be doing.”

Games played at the tournaments are recorded and will go toward their

ranking.

“All the games get registered on the OBA (Ontario Basketball Association) website and that goes toward our ranking and seeding when provincial championships come up toward the end of April. Right now our team is 10 – 4.” Verner said. “We’d like to move our way up the rankings. We have two games next weekend in Brampton as part of the Ontario Basketball League program.”

The Orangeville Hawks have several programs for young basketball players including house league and rep teams.
