With over 2000 free activities scheduled to take place in more than 170 communities across Ontario, day or weekend tripping has never looked so good.
The Culture Days weekend, from September 30 to October 2, provides Ontarians with the opportunity to explore the riches of arts and culture in their own backyard, and also to travel to neighbouring communities, towns and cities to see what is unique to those areas.
Orangeville is one of the 12 cities and towns that will raise the Culture Days flag at their town halls in celebration of Culture Days proclamations or declarations being made in their municipalities.
“As we engaged with people across the province to develop Ontario’s Culture Strategy, we heard clearly that culture matters to Ontarians,” said Eleanor McMahon, Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport. “It enriches our communities and our lives, enhances our quality of life and contributes to our province’s economy. Taking place in every corner of the province, Culture Days is a celebration of all the creativity Ontario has to offer – and I encourage residents and visitors alike to explore, experience and enjoy this year’s diverse events.”
You’ve never been to Brockville but have heard of its delightful downtown? Always been curious about the London arts scene or wanted to explore the rustic charm of Sault Ste. Marie? Have a cousin or friend in Kingston that is long overdue for a visit? Then fill up a tank of gas, hop on a bus or take the train to experience the plethora of activities that are waiting for you at each destination. Culture Days presents the perfect opportunity to not only explore the beauty and uniqueness that each area of Ontario has to offer, but to also roll up your sleeves and get involved in the arts and cultures that have helped to shape each region. You might even be able to bring home some of your own creations!
Whether you are planning a day trip or a weekend mini-holiday, here are a few examples of what a travel itinerary could look like:
Orangeville, Shelburne, Creemore, and Brentwood
Take an early stroll along Orangeville’s streets to view the intricately carved Tree Sculptures, before heading north on Highway 10 towards Shelburne to participate in Yoga, Art & Meditation. Spend the afternoon in Creemore viewing exhibitions of local artists taking part in Clearview Township’s Small Halls Festival. Continue with the Festival by heading down County Road 9 to Brentwood, where you can watch the axe-throwing and saw competitions and listen to good old country music at the Outdoor Country Music, Market and Festival.
Ontario Culture Days is part of the national Culture Days celebration representing the largest-ever public participation campaign undertaken by the Canadian arts and cultural community. Since 2010, more than 10 million Canadians have participated in over 40,000 Culture Days activities hosted by over 5,000 Canadian artists, cultural organizations and groups across Canada.
