The Orangeville District Secondary School Bears junior basketball team are holding their own in the District 4 standings but working to get on the win side in the win / loss column.
The Bears are currently in fifth place in the eight team District standings with a 5 – 6 record.
After taking a loss to Our Lady of Lourdes on January 15, the squad rebounded two days later with a 54 – 50 win over Centre Wellington District High School on January 17.
The game against the OLOL Celtics started out as a pretty evenly matched game with the score tied at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter the Celtics took a lead and he Bears fought back to again tie the game at 28.
At the end of the half the Celtics moved ahead with seven point lead.
The second half turned out to be a tough go for the Bears when the OLOL teams pulled ahead then kept up a steady scoring streak while the ODSS team ran into trouble hitting the hoop.
The final score was 60-35 for the Celtics.
“They came out hard in the second half and we didn’t play back the way we should have,” said Bears shooting guard, Andrew Burnside, after the game. “We played better in the
first half but struggled in the second half shooting the ball and they got a lot of fast break points.”
Despite the loss the Bears still played a solid game with a lot of talent on the court.
“I thought we moved the ball and had some good cuts,” Andrew said. “We had a pretty good defence. We need to close in on the shooters better, but our overall pressure was good.”
Centennial Collegiate from Guelph is currently in first place in the district with one loss after 11 games.
J.F Ross is in second place followed by Guelph Collegiate and Our Lady of Lourdes.
The Bears will be back on their home court at ODSS on Monday, February 4, when they host Guelph Collegiate.
Game time is 3:45 p.m.
