Former Orangeville resident and Junior A Northmen, Jon Mason, has been inducted to the Roanoke College Sports Hall of Fame in Salem, Virginia.

Mason, a product of the Northmen Minor Lacrosse system, played five years of Junior A lacrosse with the Northmen as well as field lacrosse for the Orangeville Generals.

He is a graduate of Orangeville District Secondary School and a member of the school’s Sports Hall of Fame.

After arriving at Roanoke College he started an outstanding collegiate career becoming the Roanoke College men’s lacrosse program’s all-time points leader with 282 points, and all-time top scorer with 247 goals – both were Old Dominion Athletic Conference records at the time of his graduation.

He was named Roanoke College Athlete of the Year in 2007 and holds several other College records.

Records include most goals as a rookie (41), most points in a single season (91), goals in a season (75), most goals in a game (10) and most goals in a tournament game.

His start in lacrosse, Mason explained, is a ‘family affair.”

“I started playing lacrosse when I was three in the paperweight division and played right up to Junior A from 2001 to 2005. I played Major lacrosse in Barrie with Lindsay Sanderson – he coached me all the way through. My Dad was a really good player. He won five President’s Cups and played for Canada in box lacrosse. My younger sister is also a good lacrosse player – it’s kind of a family affair.”

He was introduced to Roanoke College during his final year of high school.

“I was at ODSS. We put a team together and played in a tournament in Ithica, New York. We met people there and that opened the door. I went to the College for a visit and it was a good fit,” Mason explained. “My points record is still standing.”

Near the end of this Junior career he played for both teams. Finishing the field lacrosse season at school in the Spring, he would return to Orangeville and join the Junior A Northmen after the season was already underway and take his place on the team.

He returned to the College for a Hall of Fame reception on April 7, during the

school’s Alumni Weekend festivities.

He was joined by his wife, children, and parents.

He received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Roanoke

College then attained his MBA from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2013.

He currently lives in Oakville, Ontario with his wife Audrey and their children.
