Devonleigh Homes is once again moving to cement its legacy in Orangeville.
Representatives from the locally owned home building firm were on hand for a special ground-breaking ceremony just off Riddell Road last Thursday (Nov. 21), as the firm prepares to start work on a new five-storey, 42-unit executive apartment unit on the west side of town.
“This is the second apartment building we have built as a company, but the first here in Orangeville,” said Amanda Ponce, Devonleigh’s Operations Manager. “We’re really proud to be bringing this project here to town, because, to us, Orangeville is home.”
Devonleigh Homes was launched in Orangeville back in 1996. The brainchild of Andrew Kidd, the firm has built more than 3,000 homes since its inception more than 23 years ago. While its roots remain deep here in the community, Devonleigh’s footprint has spread throughout southern Ontario, with notable projects in towns such as Collingwood, Midland, Beeton and Huntsville. In Orangeville, the company is responsible for much of the residential development near Riddell Road, including the Montgomery Village and Spencer Avenue subdivisions.
Design work for this new condominium complex began back in 2015. Following last week’s ground-breaking, Ms. Ponce estimates the building will be complete, and ready for residents to move in, by May 2021. As of press time, 15 of the 42 units had already been sold, with interest apparently, high.
There are one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom apartments planned for the condo. Alongside the individual units, the facility will boast underground parking, a rooftop terrace and a common room.
“There’s a need in Orangeville for this type of product,” Ms. Ponce said. “There are families who have larger properties on the outskirts of town, who are getting older, and they want to enjoy that retirement lifestyle. This facility is going to be an executive building, with really high-end finishes that will appeal to a lot of people. This will allow people to maintain a certain all of the comforts they’re used to, while ushering in something of a lifestyle change.”
Units start at $450,000 for one-bedroom, with two-bedroom condos expected to run approximately $550,000. Those interested in the three-bedroom units are too late, with Ms. Ponce sharing they are all completely sold.
But that doesn’t mean there won’t be more opportunities in the future to invest. Ms. Ponce informed the Citizen this first condo building was the start of an ambitious plan to redevelop parts of Riddell Road.
“There are future buildings slated for along the road, likely a little closer to Alder (St.), which will really compliment this build, and help to create a nice little area in this part of town,” Ms. Ponce said. “This is a step in a broader direction for us. When we started, we were just doing detached homes, and then went out into town homes, but these big, apartment buildings are a whole new ball of wax. Andrew Kidd, the owner, is a complete visionary. He loves the challenge (of building these apartment buildings) and we, and the community, will love the end result.”
