The County of Dufferin is doing its part to help make post-secondary education more affordable for youth by once again rolling out its scholarship program for those looking to continue their studies.
Since its launch in 2015, the Dufferin County Scholarship Program has paid out a total of $25,000 to 10 students looking to live their post-secondary dream. Another five scholarships of $2,500 are up for grabs this year for youth pursuing an education in one of science and technology (including health sciences, engineering and general science), business and social sciences, agriculture, the arts and skilled trades and applied training programs.
Speaking to the Citizen, Warden Darren White spoke of the importance of offering assistance to youth as they plan to continue their studies, stating he considers the scholarship more of an investment for the region’s future.
“I believe it is important for us to support our local youth, not only to continue their education in a post-secondary institution but also so that they consider returning to Dufferin County once they graduate,” Mr. White said.
To be eligible for the program, applicants must currently be a resident of Dufferin County and be a current-year high school graduate. Exceptions are made for those in the agricultural stream, as applicants in this field can already be enrolled in a post-secondary program.
Students wishing to apply must submit a completed application along with a 300-word essay, transcripts from Grade 11 and the first semester of Grade 12, a letter of reference from a staff member of their current school and proof that they have been accepted to a post-secondary institution or training program.
Completed applications must be received by May 31 with successful applications being notified by the end of June.
