Orangeville will be receiving funding from Dufferin County for the purchase and installation of a fixed generator at their Emergency Operations Centre, to better prepare the town in the event of a disaster.

The funding request from the town came under the Municipal Emergency Readiness Fund, and was approved by Dufferin County council at their meeting last Thursday (March 8), and was brought forward by the General Government Services Committee. The amount is for $10,000 “upon confirmation of the completion of the project.”

“What happens if there’s no power there? That’s a real problem,” said Orangeville Mayor Jeremy Williams. “So having a dedicated electrical generator just means that it’s already set up and ready to go, we can just click a switch and we have the ability then to do the things we need to do, from an emergency management perspective.”

He told the Citizen that it’s crucially important to have the generator, as they do mock disaster scenarios and tests yearly, to better prepare for if and when a situation really happens.

“That’s the whole thing about emergency management is you don’t know what the emergency is going to be, but you have the plan for every eventuality.”

Asked about whether the flooding during last summer and this past February was the driving force behind the funding request, Mayor Williams said there wasn’t pressure, but the flooding  “certainly helped to make it an easier decision. This is something that’s been ongoing for some time.”

County Council also approved 2018 community grants totalling $105,000, following a review process undertaken by Headwaters Communities in Action.
