Throwing a strike took on a whole different perspective at the Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kid’s Sake event held at the Best Western hotel in Orangeville last Friday, March 22, and Sunday, March 24.

Participants took up the challenge on the bowling lanes using Wi bowling and were pretty adept at getting the hang of playing a virtual sport on a screen.

The annual event is main fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dufferin and District.

“We’ve been doing this for 39 years here in Dufferin County – since 1980,” explained Big Brothers Big Sisters executive director, Nancy Stallmach.

Originally the event was held at a bowling alley in Orangeville, but when the bowling alley closed down they decided to continue the event substituting the computer simulated alley for the real thing. And guests really enjoy it.

“This is our largest fundraiser. We raise about a third of our budget from it,” Ms. Stallmach said Sunday. “Our goal is $50,000. This is our second day running this event. We were here on Friday as well. There are a lot of local businesses here, there’s also service clubs and churches that put in teams. We have some families, all sorts of people. We ask them to raise pledges to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters. They come and they get an hour of bowling and there’s games and prizes and raffles. Our theme this year is Neon Brights and Bowling Lights.”

Big Brothers Big sisters has a huge impact on young people who need their services.

“In Big Brothers Big Sisters we match children with caring mentors that have a positive affect on their lives. We had 250 children in all of our programs last year. We also have school based one-on-one programs. We’re in schools in Dufferin County, Hillsburgh, and some of the outlying adjacent areas. Bowl for Kid’s sake really helps us stay in operation. We’re so grateful for everyone who has supported us.”
