Westside varsity soccer team captures District 4 championship

The Westside Secondary School Thunder boys varsity soccer team are the District 4 champions after a 5 – 0 win over the Centre Dufferin District High School Royals in the final game.

Due to COVID conditions this year, the schedule and the championship was organized over two days of qualifying games and one final championship day.

It was a gruelling test for the players on the seven regional high school teams that competed. Teams had to play three games on each qualifying day, with one team slotted in for four games in a single day.

Games were played at Shelburne both at the CDDHS field and on the soccer pitch at Greenwood Park.

At the end of the two days, Westside and Centre Dufferin were the two teams still standing.

They met for the final game on Thursday, October 21, in Shelburne.

Westside had a stellar performance during the tournament and went undefeated for the win.

On day one of competition, they scored 14 goals while allowing only three against.

Returning for the second day of qualifiers on October 18, the Thunder shut-out two of the three teams they met on the soccer pitch.

The return to Shelburne for the final on Thursday, October 21, had the Thunder take an early lead which boosted their confidence. They kept up the momentum for the rest of the game and left the field with a 5 – 0 win and the District Title.

“Our team made some mistakes, then we covered that with some good plays,” said Thunder team captain, Chris Sramek. “We got some good early goals that gave us a boost.”

Chris said the qualifying games had a 30-minute half, rather than the regular 45 minutes, which helped get them through several games on each day.

“I’m very proud of myself and my team for our accomplishments this year,” he said of his squad winning the District 4 championship.

Unfortunately, this is as far as they can go this year.

The usual CWOSSA regional competition and OFSSA provincial competitions are not being held this year.

If the Thunder had the chance to go on, there is little doubt they would have performed well against other top teams across the province.
