As Junior C teams battle it out across the province in the final few games of the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s semi-finals, the local North Carruthers Division is ready to start the championship series after wrapping up the semi’s on Sunday.

The Stayner Siskins won their semi-final over the Alliston Hornets after an outstanding comeback that saw the Siskins battle back from a three-game deficit.

That series got underway on March 24.

The Alliston team won the first three games including a 3-0 shut-out in the third game of the series, leaving Hornets fans ready to celebrate a four game sweep on home ice.

It all turned around when the Siskins won game four in Alliston’s arena to keep the series alive.

After winning five in Stayner, the Siskins delivered a blow to the Alliston club in game six on April 1, when they scored four unanswered goals in the first period to win the game 5-1 and force game seven in Stayner on April 3.

The final game was tied 2-2 at the end of the second period. With no scoring in the third, the teams returned for overtime.

A scoreless OT period brought the teams back for a second overtime period.

Stayner scored at 39 seconds into the second overtime period to take the win and earn the right to advance to the championship.

In the other semi-final series, the Schomberg Cougars battled the Orillia Terriers. The teams finished the regular season in second and third place and were separated by only a single point in the standings.

Orillia got the early lead in the series with a 2-1 win in game one.

The series was tied when Schomberg evened it up with a 4-3 win on home ice in game two.

At the end of six games, the series was tied 3-3 and the squads met for game seven in Orillia on Saturday, April 2.

The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the first period and kept up the pressure to win the game 5-1 and earn the right to advance.

Stayner and Schomberg will now meet in a best-of-seven series for the North Carruthers Division championship.

The winner of the Division will go on to play for the Conference title.

Conference champions will vie for the Junior C provincial Schmalz Cup championship.

This year the Schmalz Cup will be played as a round-robin tournament style event at the University of Guelph with the final championship game being played on May 15.
