Dairy Queen Christmas is on its way back to Orangeville, with the local franchise prepping for its 17th annual Miracle Treat Day.
“We call it Dairy Queen Christmas because every customer that comes through the door is so happy,” said owner John Lockyer. “People are supportive and if they know the dollars are going to a great cause they don’t mind standing in line.”
The local franchise started partaking in the event in 2003 and it has since become a summertime staple. Through a partnership with Children’s Miracle Network, the proceeds raised from Miracle Treat Day go to hospitals that are members of the network – 170 children’s hospitals across the United States and Canada.
While customers will be lining up, ordering and collecting their Blizzards, Dairy Queen employees, volunteers, and children from the Children’s Miracle Network will be focused on raising proceeds for The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Orangeville’s location is one of only a few that choose to donate the full price of Blizzards to the fundraiser.
“The reason we donate the entire amount is because this community supports us so wonderfully and it’s a way for us to give back,” said Mr. Lockyer “Our Sick Kids Hospital touches almost every member of the community.”
Last year the event raised $62,000 in proceeds. This year they are looking to raise $65,000, adding to the more than $500,000 raised since the event started.
Children’s Miracle Network says hospitals that are members of the network treat 16,000 children in the ER, 935 with diabetes, 2,128 with cancer, 2,329 children for surgeries, and 925 babies in NICU – all on a daily basis.
“Its so close to us strictly because of that because of the fact there are so many affected by it,” Mr. Lockyer told the Citizen in describing why the event is so close to his own heart.
Miracle Treat Day will be running from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m. on Thursday, August 8. Those looking to volunteer the day of can contact the Orangeville Dairy Queen at 519-942-1933 or email orangeville@dqgrillandchill.ca.
Proceeds are being raised beforehand with pre-order coupons and blizzards available at the local location – 540 Riddell Road in Orangeville. For more information on Miracle Treat Day visit www.miracletreatday.ca.
