April was proclaimed as Sikh Heritage Month in Mono during a regular Council meeting last Tuesday (April 12).
The proclamation was made by Mono Mayor John Creelman and the Sikh flag was raised at Town Hall on April 14 and will remain raised for the rest of the month.
April is the month that Sikhs celebrate Vaisakhi, the formalization of the Khalsa and the Sikh articles of faith.
Sikhs have been in Canada for many years and have a rich heritage here. Many started off in British Columbia in the logging industry and today can be found in almost every corner of Canada. They play an important part in our communities.
Meanwhile, it came up during the April 12 Council meeting that Credit Valley Conservation is looking for an exemption from the Town’s Noise Bylaw for events this summer at the Island Lake Conversation Area.
The Bylaw prevents the use of loudspeakers after 5 p.m. and some of the events are planned to continue until as late as 9:30 p.m.
Unfortunately, some residents objected to the request, citing the potential disruption of their peace and quiet.
Council decided to only grant an exemption for the planned Canada Day festivities, which will include a live band at the amphitheatre and fireworks until 9:30 p.m. on July 1.
The other events noted, were a wedding and the Music in the Park concert series.
Council waived the $1,000 noise bylaw exemption application fee, considering all the CVC and the Island Lake Conservation Area does for the Town and for the surrounding communities.
This decision seems short sited, considering of the unlikely potential that any major disruption of solitude would be presented by a concert series. which would bring the community out for a relaxing musical interlude at Island Lake Park.
The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) Committee was announced, at Council;s April 12 meeting.
Presently, six citizens plus Mayor John Creelman, Coun. Ralph Manktelow, and a staff member will compose the committee.
However, there is room for two more citizen members. Anyone interested may contact either Councillor Ralph Manktelow or the Town Clerk, Fred Simpson to apply.
The Town of Mono’s phone number is (519) 941-3599.
It was decided that Mono would join with Orangeville and several other Dufferin County municipalities to establish a bylaw to regulate freelance taxi services like Uber and Lyft. Orangeville will draft a bylaw for each municipality to consider. Once the bylaw is passed, Orangeville will administer it on behalf of all the municipalities.
Administration cost will be offset by the licensing fees.
