Federal Liberals eliminate fees to meeting on electoral reform

Responding to a suggestion by Conservative House Leader Andrew Scheer that the event was just a Liberal fundraiser, the Dufferin-Caledon Federal Liberal Association has cancelled a $10 admission fee to its panel discussion on electoral reform.

“Be assured our Association independently put this event together to promote discussion in our community, without Party or Government support, about the important issue of electoral reform,” advised George denHaan, the association’s vice-president. “We have a diverse panel presenting, and we did invite our MP, David Tilson, to participate as a panelist but he declined.  While we initially opted to charge a very modest fee of $10 to help cover the costs, we have decided to make this donation optional to ensure that everyone can come and participate.”

The panel is to include Professor Barry Kay from Wilfrid Laurier University, who supports ranked ballots; Professor Dennis Pilon from York University, a member of Fair Vote Canada who supports proportional representation, and Phil Olsson, a senior consultant and advisor with KJ Harrison and Partners Inc.

“We are looking forward to the forum and invite all local residents to come and engage in the discussion,” Mr. denHaan said, noting that seating is limited and those interested in attending should visit Dufferin-Caledon.Liberal.ca for an advance ticket.

The event will take place at the Caledon Community Complex in Caledon East next Sunday, June 19, from 2 to 4 p.m.  their own perspectives.  Each of the panelists will have an opening presentation, with the latter half of the session given to the audience for questions and answers.
