Orangeville’s public art collection continues to grow. The Town has announced its Call for Artists for the 2019 Utility Box Art Display Program. With a submission deadline of May 17, the Town is looking for local artists to help beautify the community and celebrate the Town’s vibrant arts culture.
Since this popular program began in 2016, 13 functional utility boxes have been transformed into colourful works of art for residents and visitors to enjoy. Designs by 11 different local artists are featured at the various locations. In addition to recognizing these artists, the Utility Box Art Display Program aims to celebrate the Town’s culture and history, and to promote Orangeville as an arts and culture hub for the region.
“The utility box program gives visual artists the opportunity to give back to the community that nurtures them,” says Sharon Wadsworth-Smith, a local artist whose work is displayed on two utility box locations. “The creativity that flows through Orangeville inspires, encourages, and creates. I am happy to be a small part of that.”
Up to five utility boxes will be wrapped in unique and original art under this year’s competition. The recommended sites for the 2019 installations include boxes located at the intersections of Riddell Road and Alder Street, College Avenue and Blind Line, Riddell Road and Montgomery Boulevard, and Dawson Road and Town Line. One large box at Kay Cee Gardens is also included.
Local artists are invited to respond to the Call for Artists by Friday, May 17. Eligible artists must live in Dufferin County and be 18 years of age. Submissions will be jury-reviewed and selected artists will be paid $500 to have their work showcased at one of the five utility boxes locations. More details and an application for artists can be found at https://www.orangeville.ca/economic-development/utility-box-art.
