COVID-19 Vaccine Hub underway in Orangeville

Preparations for a COVID-19 Hub Vaccination Clinic in Orangeville are now underway.

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph (WDG) Public Health in a press release on Monday (Feb. 22) said the public health unit, Dufferin County, and the Town of Orangeville are now working on completing the preparations for the vaccination clinic which will be located at the Alder Recreation Centre.

The clinic is expected to open on March 3.

“Moving quickly and strategically is essential to getting our region vaccinated against COVID-19. I thank our partners at the County and Town for their commitment to ensuring the people of Dufferin County have local access to the vaccines necessary to ending this pandemic,” said Dr. Nicola Mercer, Medical Officer of Health and CEO for WDG Public Health, in the press release.

Alder Recreation Centre was selected for the location of the vaccine clinic for it accessibility, parking and large capacity for vaccinations. When the clinic opens Public Health says it will have the capacity of 300 vaccinations per day with the ability to increase to 2,500 per day.

Mobile clinics in Dufferin County will supplement, the Alder Recreation Centre so residents can receive vaccines as close to where the live.

“I’m am excited about the progress our public health unit and municipal staff are making toward having a vaccination clinic in Orangeville to serve the needs of all Dufferin County residents,” said Dufferin County Warden Darren White. “Our plan is to have a facility set up and ready to vaccinate large number of people just as soon as we receive the vaccine from the Ministry of Health.”

The Orangeville vaccination hub will first start with a focus on vaccinations as directed by the Province’s Ethical Framework for Vaccine Distribution. WDG Public Health says at this time vaccines are by appointment only, but as supply expands the site will transition to vaccinations for the broader public.

WDG Public Health, as of Feb. 23 has open pre-registration for eligible individuals identified under the Province’s Framework for Vaccine Distribution.

Public Health says the online pre-registration will help them to contact members of prioritized groups as soon as they are able to book an appointment for the vaccine.

Priority groups eligible for pre-registration at this time include:

• Adults 80 years of age and older living in WDG
• Adults who are a member of an Indigenous community and live in WDG
• Long-term care and/or retirement home staff
• Essential support staff and essential caregivers in long-term care and retirement homes
• Adult recipients of chronic home care (Central West LHIN- Dufferin Residents Only
• Adult recipients of chronic home care (Waterloo Wellington LHIN – Guelph and Wellington Residents
• Healthcare workers in hospitals, COVID-19 Response Roles, medical first responders, community Healthcare workers serving specialized and general population, healthcare workers in congregate settings, healthcare services for Indigenous populations, laboratory services, and non-acute and rehabilitation and therapy
