Toys for Tots receives plenty of support from public

The annual Tots for Toys campaign received plenty of support from members of the public who were out doing their Christmas shopping at Walmart in Orangeville on Saturday, December.

The Orangeville Police Service had a van parked in front of the store and were asking for donations of new unwrapped toys as well as any cash donations that people would like to give.

It was a busy shopping day and a steady stream of holiday shoppers made a point of buying an extra toy to drop off, the van being quickly filled with a lot of donations.

The program works with the Salvation Army to distribute the toys to kids who may not otherwise find something under the tree on Christmas morning.

They also used the cash to purchase gift certificates that can be redeemed later.

“Once we get all the toys collected we take them all to the Salvation Army church,” said OPS Auxiliary Sgt. Kelly German, who along with Auxiliary Constable Jenna Cassidy braved a rather blustery and snowy day to collect the toys.

“That’s where next week they will distribute them to the families who have registered for it. It’s for all of Dufferin County. All the money we receive, we come back and get kids cards. We could end up with 350 gift cards for kids.”

Despite rather inclement weather the shopping area was packed as people took advantage of the second last weekend before Christmas and the holiday spirit was a live as many saw the police van and picked up and extra toy to donate.
