Soul Blues revivalist Tony Holiday appearing at Blues Jazz Festival

Memphis soul-blues revivalist, Tony Holiday, will be appearing at the Orangeville Blues and Jazz Festival on Saturday, June 4, and will be bringing his style of soul/blues to town. 

Since relocating from Salt Lake City to Memphis in 2017, he has been at the centre of a soul blues revival in Memphis, anchored by a contingent of young, savvy, well-schooled musicians with a ‘family-like’ attitude and a strong belief in one another.

Holiday and this loose Memphis collective are building on the city’s rich traditions and carrying them forward.

The Memphis sound is unique, and Holiday has become part of this style of music.

“Blending the cool blues-rock of acts like The Black Keys and North Mississippi Allstar with a Memphis soul sound, Holiday captures the mood and feel of the place where he now resides,” is how a review from Glide Magazine describes his work.

Holiday recently released his second solo album title, ‘Motel Mississippi, via Foty Below Records.

Motel Mississippi follows his first album, ‘Soul Service, produced by Ori Naftaly.

“There’s something in the water in Memphis, and Tony Holiday has tapped into it to contribute to an exciting new chapter unfolding in this storied region,” said Maximum Volume UK.

This album followed two volumes of Tony Holiday’s Porch Sessions. Holiday travelled across the United States and throughout Europe recording blues musicians on their front porches, in front of juke joints, in the countryside, and even on the front steps of raucous night spots in bustling cities.

The result was two critically acclaimed albums.

The guest list on Porch Sessions included some older blues legends like Charlie Musselwhite and Bobby Rush, as well as some of Holiday’s contemporaries.

His newest album, which was released on April 14 of this year, was recorded at Zebra Ranch studio – about an hour outside of Memphis, in Coldwater, Mississippi.

The album is equal parts hypnotic blues, driving soul, and juke joint stomper.

The Orangeville Blues and Jazz Festival will take place on June 2 to 4 at various venues around Orangeville.

Tony Holiday and his band will be appearing at the Orangeville Opera House on Sunday, June 4.

The show will start at 12:00 p.m., with special guest Steve Marriner, followed by Rob Lutes & Rob MacDonald, and Barbra Lica.
