Fire up your engine and get ready to ride for a good cause when the Knights of Columbus 15th annual Motorcycle Charity Poker Run gets underway on Sept. 10.
The local chapter of the Knights of Columbus (#8851) is once again hitting the open road to raise funds for a local family in need.
The fun run will get started at the Orangeville Curling Club and make its way up to Collingwood and back.
Riders will stop at several places along the way to pick up their cards to complete their poker hand.
The person with the best poker hand at the end of the day will win $1,000.
“This is our 15th annual charity poker run and silent auction,” explained Kip McKenna, Grand Knight of Orangeville. “It’s for a local family that’s in need. Riders come to the Curling Club in the morning to register. They fill out the forms then head out for the run. They go up to Collingwood and collect cards at every stop. At each stop, there are cards and they draw one. They have to be back by 3:00 p.m. The winning poker hand wins $1,000.”
At each stop, a person will have a deck of cards and hand one card to each rider. If you’re lucky, you might have a royal flush when you get your final card.
The event also features live entertainment and a barbecue back at home base – the Orangeville Curling Club.
“We also take donations along with the silent auction and door prizes and we have a band that will play from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.,” Mr. McKenna explained.
New this year, the Poker Run welcomes cars to the event, so if you don’t ride a motorcycle, you can still be part of the fun.
“The funds we raise goes to a local family that needs help,” Mr. McKenna said. “They have two kids that are handicapped. The funds go to help with things like wheelchairs, medication, things needed around the house and transportation.”
The poker run provides the opportunity to enjoy a fall ride while the weather is still warm enough to take out your motorcycle. Participants will enjoy the camaraderie of other bikers while raising money for a good cause.
The Knights of Columbus Poker Run will take place on Sunday, Sept. 10, with registration from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Riders must return to the Orangeville Curling Club by 3 p.m. to hand in their final poker hand and be eligible for the $1,000 top prize.
