The Dufferin County Cultural Resource Circle will host an Indiana Taco Fundraiser next Wednesday, July 27, to raise money for their Pow wow on the Labour Day weekend.
Incorporated in December 2014, the Resource Circle has as its mission statement to “return traditional and cultural teachings of First Nation, Métis and Inuit Peoples who live in the Dufferin County and surrounding area.”
A non-profit organization with 30 to 40 members, their goal is to “bridge the gaps that may occur between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples.”
Donations and sponsors are always appreciated, allowing to pay for yearly insurance to keep programs and events running.
Hosting dinners, fundraisers, celebrating National Aboriginal day and their first Pow wow last year, these events help fund future ones.
To cover their Pow wow, the Resource Circle will have an Indiana Taco Fundraiser on Wednesday, July 27, at St. John’s Anglican Church on Highway 9, across from the Motion Mazda dealership.
Lunch service goes from noon to 2 p.m., dinner runs from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. One taco costs $8; a taco and drink cost $9. Special offer is purchasing six tacos and getting one for free. Deliveries are offered by calling Debbie Sipkema at 519-216-8174 or Angela Carlisle at 519-939-1165.
The Pow wow takes place at Island Lake Conservation Area on Labour Day weekend, September 3 and 4, beginning at 9 a.m.
Debbie Sipkema, the Resource Circle’s Chair/Founder, says a Pow wow is a ceremonial gathering where the community comes together.
“It re-grounds us to Mother Earth, it reconnects us to the environment around us.”
There will be Métis teachings, presentations and elders answering questions.
Ms. Sipkema says the Resource Circle makes it easier for families and children amongst First Nations, Métis and Inuit to feel good about their cultures.
“It brings in another culture, another understanding.”
