Orangeville Council voted to extend tax and transit relief measures for residents from Dec. 31 until Mar. 31 during their meeting on Monday night.

Penalties and interest on late water bill and property tax payments will continue to be waived during the relief period and transit rides within Orangeville will remain free of charge.

“With regards to the recent change of our status here in Dufferin… going into the ‘red’ zone, I’m sure that’s going to affect some of our residents who potentially may have further financial struggles,” said Coun. Debbie Sherwood, in reference to why she brought the motion forward.

The total revenue loss for the Town through the transit and tax relief measures is roughly $40,000 a month, with $10,000 in lost revenues for transit and $30,000 for waiving penalties on late payments.

Coun. Sherwood recognized the relief measures have to be temporary, but with Wellington–Dufferin–Guelph Public Health moving the region to the “red” zone, she said residents need the support now.

“I’m worried it will affect many of our businesses and our residents financially, some that maybe even would normally travel for work into the locked down area… and maybe will be without employment,” she reasoned.

Council will decide prior to March 31 whether the relief measures should be extended further.
