A presentation was delivered to Mono Council last Tuesday regarding the refurbishing of the washroom in Monora Park.
During the presentation, Kim Heaton, Director of Recreation, presented Council with a proposed budget of the refurbishment for $24,725.
Because the building would be used by the public, it had to go through the usual building code procedures and trade work had to be completed by licensed contractors, which accounted for some added expense over being done in-house.
Coun. Ralph Manktelow felt that the price was rather high and asked for a breakdown and was told that the structure required almost a rebuild as opposed to just a renovation, plus the added building code costs accounted for the total.
Coun. Fred Nix, although he liked the idea, wondered where Council was going to find the money in the newly drafted budget, as they had already trimmed a considerable amount from it.
Treasurer Les Halucha said the item could be brought back for the next meeting if Council wanted him to build the $25,000 into the draft, while Deputy Mayor John Creelman felt that it could be found in the Budget but that he would stand firm on the tax increase being limited to exactly one per cent.
Other councillors agreed that the washroom was definitely required and that the money should be found in the budget.
Les Halucha mentioned that the guardrail replacement could perhaps be reduced by that amount and the money allocated to the washroom, to which Public Works Director and Superintendent of Roads, Mike Dunmore said that he would be willing to reduce that budget item to $100,000, thus freeing up $27,000 for the washroom. This was accepted by Council.
