McGuinness wins unanimous decision

After being out of the game for a year and a-half, Logan “Cotton” McGuinness made what could be called a triumphant return to the ring on Saturday (Mar. 28) night at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.

Billed as the main event, McGuinness was up against Luis Armando Juarez, a 32 year-old Argentinian who came to the bout with a 19-9-2 record.

After winning three North American titles – lightweight, super featherweight, and featherweight – McGuinness had to take a break after suffering an injury. He was stripped of his featherweight title, as per NABA rules, that removes a fighter’s title after being inactive for a year.

“The plan is to get busy again and start fighting and get back to where I was a year and a-half ago,” McGuinness said prior to Saturday night’s fight. “I think the break did my body good and I’m trying to get back to where I was.”

Of course there was a lot of speculation about how McGuinness would perform after an 18 month layoff, but he didn’t disappoint and opened by moving Juarez back to the ropes at the opening bell.

For the most part, it was a tight, in close fight.

Juarez hit the canvas in the second round, but it was called a slip by the referee who dusted him off and re-started the fight. Juarez also took a point deduction in the sixth round after excessive holding.

From there, Juarez couldn’t beat McGuinness’ successful counter punching.

The bout went the distance – eight rounds – and ended with a unanimous decision in McGuinnes’ favour.

The win brings his pro record to 20-0-1, and his successful return to the ring must be putting him on the ‘watch’ list as a contender for even bigger things.
