Westside Secondary School has done it again – all of their donations have given them the title of the top fundraiser once more for their infamous Pink Day.

For three years in a row, Westside Secondary School has been the number one fundraiser for The Breast Cancer Society of Canada (BCSC) and their Dress for the Cause program.

Dress for the Cause is a program that has been running for 20 years, and has raised over $8.8 million for breast cancer research. They ask everyone in schools and in the workplace to raise money and awareness by donating and, literally, dressing for the cause in as much pink as they can.

Since 2004, Westside has been personally impacted by breast cancer, and because of that they started to participate in the Dress for the Cause fundraising. They hold all kinds of wacky and fun events for both students and teachers. There have been teacher karaoke competitions, bottle flipping matches, tug-of-war, and many more creative competitions, all to raise money for breast cancer.

The part that Westside does the best is DRESSING for the CAUSE, during which the whole school is wearing pink in every way they can, and this has raised $20,410 this past year, giving them the title of Canada’s top fundraiser for this program. Their overall total from the first Pink Day to now is $135,000!

With all of the head-shaving and leg-waxing, Westside is very proud to have this title. “To be able to sit here right now and say that we’ve successfully raised over $20, 000 is just so surreal. It’s completely overwhelming,” says the events long-time coordinator, Christine Kirkland.

In recognition of everything this school has done, The Breast Cancer Society of Canada will be making a $5, 000 donation to a local cancer treatment centre, The Headwaters Health Care Centre. Everyone is very proud to have accomplished this for our community.

In the coming years, Westside hopes to continue to raise as much as they can for this amazing cause, in hopes that one day we will find a cure.
