The District 4 girls’ high school basketball season is underway, and the Westside Secondary School Thunder girls’ varsity team left the court with a win after their first game of the season.

The Thunder were up against the Centre Dufferin District High School Royals on Royals home court in Shelburne on Wednesday, Sept. 20.

It is a varsity team for Westside this year as they failed to have a junior team, so several players are younger but competing against senior girls. That didn’t seem to make much of a difference, as the Westside squad put out a strong effort in the first game and looked like a talented team.

The Thunder had a solid offence on the court for the entire game, playing their positions well and setting up a good routine to give them some shots to the hoop.

At the half, the Westside girls led the Royals by two points with 14-12 on the scoreboard.

Westside stayed ahead for the third quarter, going ahead by four points to end the quarter with a 24-20 lead.

The fourth quarter provided the most excitement when the Royals battled back to tie the game at 28 with just over four minutes remaining on the clock.

Westside put out a solid effort in the final few minutes, hitting three hoops and shutting down the CDDHS offence to win the game 34-28.

There are six high schools in District 4 competition this year. In addition to Centre Dufferin, teams are entered from Emmanuel Christian High School, Erin District High School, Norwell District High School, Wellington Heights Secondary School, and Westside Secondary High School.

There is a 10-game schedule this year, so teams will all have plenty of opportunity to improve through the season.

The Thunder will be away for a road game on Oct. 2.

They will return to their home court at Westside on Wednesday, Oct. 4, to host Wellington Heights Secondary School.

Game time is 2:30 p.m.
