Sir:
I agree with Columnist Scrafield that we should accept our three vaccinations (I did) and wear masks when near others (I do). I also think that those who made the errors in judgement should be called to account.
The federal government’s chief health officer told us masks were unnecessary; two months or so later she changed her mind. That’s quite a health chief.
The federal government imposed a chain of command on the national health intelligence staff, so that – instead of raising the warning evening of 30 December, 2019 when they first learned of the Wuhan outbreak – they were obliged to wait till Monday to inform their next higher-up in government. The chain of command, like all chains, took its time before deciding, in mid March 2020, that Something Must Be Done.
At that time certain restrictions were imposed on the Canadian population. But not all of us. The airlines continued to import Chinese and other citizens, some from Wuhan, and Roxham Road in Quebec continued to leak thousands of Central American refugees into Canada, untested. As far as I can tell from media reports, Roxham Road was never closed and most airports were not shut down till May 2021. But not all airports. An acquaintance who is an airline pilot was still flying to and from New York, Houston, Boston, etc. (He stayed in the cockpit at every stop.)
Airlines and international borders are federally controlled. Like the border smuggling of handguns.
Provincial health authorities appeared confused throughout the pandemic, perhaps understandably so. I think we can accurately assign blame to those who deserve it.
