Town of Orangeville offers overflow parking for residents during winter

The Town of Orangeville has offered a reprieve of sorts to beleaguered local residents with nowhere to park their vehicles overnight during the winter, designating two municipal lots for overflow parking.

Space will be offered at both Rotary Park and Fendley Park this winter on a trial basis as the Town attempts to find an answer for residents who typically park their vehicles on the street in front of their home. Overnight on-street parking during the winter months is prohibited in Orangeville. Starting Friday of next week,  Dec. 1, and ending on March 31, 2018, residents will not be able to leave their cars on any street between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m.

The entire parking lot at Fendley Park will be available for overnight winter parking, while part of the Rotary Park lot will be open. Signs will be placed informing users about which area of the parking lot is to be used on a specific night, allowing municipal staff to plow and sand the area.

This initiative comes following Council deliberations earlier in the year, where members made it clear to staff they wanted to help local residents who seemingly had nowhere to park overnight during the winter. During the trial period, Town staff will monitor the two overflow parking lots to determine levels of usage.

As per the municipality’s traffic bylaws, any vehicle left parked on a street between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. between Dec. 1 and March 31 could be ticketed or towed. And the Town has reminded residents that it is an offence to park vehicles over a municipal sidewalk.
