Town launches study for 2020-30 Recreation & Parks Master Plan

The Town of Orangeville is set to prepare a Recreation and Parks Master Plan, aimed at providing the Town with long-term direction for the provision of recreation and parks services for residents and visitors.

Over the next few months, residents will be invited to participate in a variety of consultation activities including: 

– A random telephone survey of households, with the same survey being made available online, via the Town’s website (or on paper) for those who do not receive a call, 

– Four open houses at key points in the study and various locations throughout the community, 

– A Web-based survey of volunteer program/activity groups such as pool, arena and play field users, and 

– Opportunities to provide comments or feedback online.

Each of these consultation activities will investigate the community’s needs and interests for new and/or improved recreation facilities, parks and programs. Reports will be prepared at various points in the process, and will lead to the creation of the final master plan working document.

The Town’s Master Plan Steering Committee will oversee the project. The Town has hired a consulting team to facilitate community consultation and participation, evaluate needs, make recommendations, and prepare the plan for approval.

“Every 10 years the Town needs to re-evaluate and, where necessary, re-align our road map,” said Mayor Sandy Brown. “We need to take a look at the changing recreational needs and wants of our residents and community groups. Our changing demographics include differing cultural and ethnic backgrounds as well a larger cohort of seniors. 

“How do we best spend our money to engage the most residents?  Is it indoor lacrosse, soccer, basketball?  What about a climbing gym or a zip line course? How can we engage our seniors? The Town has hired Thinc Consulting, who will provide a comprehensive overview and suggested direction for our parks, buildings and programs.”

Notices about dates, times and locations of consultation activities, and how to access the online survey will be circulated throughout the community via local media and postings at municipal facilities such as libraries, arenas, and community centres. 

The first public consultation event for the Recreation & Parks Master Plan is set for Thursday, Nov. 7.
