What can be sweeter than baking cupcakes to provide someone with a delicious treat? Baking cupcakes to donate funds to the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Orangeville and District (OSPCA), for the sixth annual National Cupcake Day.

National Cupcake Day is a coordinated Canadian event to support local shelters, SPCAs and Humane Societies, helping animals in need. It originated in Australia and after much success, was adopted in Canada. Last year, bakers across the country raised over $600,000, with the campaign having raised a total of over $2-million to date.

The local SPCA has a goal to raise $9,500 this year, with a total of $31,000 raised to date. All the money raised will go to help animals in the community.

You can register and be as creative as you want planning your Cupcake Day party. Simply plan to supply some delicious treats, invite co-workers, family or friends to attend in exchange for a donation to a participating animal welfare charity of the host’s choice. Cupcake parties can be held anywhere, and on any day in February.

“Money raised will help abused, neglected or abandoned animals get their second chance at life in a loving forever home,” says Calla Spencer, manager of the Orangeville shelter. “They can support items such as veterinary care, food and supplies, microchips and vaccinations, enrichment toys and more.”

Ms. Spencer says the day is an important event for everyone at the shelter, as they see the impact it makes on so many animals. “The staff watches the entire journey an animal takes from arriving at the centre, getting the care or medical attention they need, to finding their forever family. Events like National Cupcake Day mean that we can see even more animals in loving homes.”
