The boys of summer have returned to local baseball diamonds as the 2022 NDBL season gets underway.

The Orangeville Bengals travelled to Mansfield on Sunday, May 8, to play their season opener against the Mansfield Cubs in the Junior Division of the North Dufferin Baseball League.

Orangeville was first up to bat in the opening game. Tyler Robertson started on the mound for the Bengals and was also the first hitter of the season with a single that put him on first base.

The Bengals scored one run in the first inning to start the year.

Orangeville moved ahead in the second inning on a hit to deep centre field that brought in two runs.

That was followed by another big hit from Adam Sutowski that brought in another run.

Carter Giles followed up with a hit that brought in another run to make it a 5-0 game.

Logan Sheppard brought in a run on a hit to give the Bengals a 6-0 lead at the end of the inning.

The third inning was a fast one with the Bengals being shut down and no runs scored.

It was the later innings that saw both teams really get the bats moving and a lot of action on offence.

Playing against daylight and time as it’s still early in the season, both teams started racking up the points.

Final was an 18-16 win for the Bengals for their first win of the 2022 season.

There are eight teams in the Junior Division of the North Dufferin Baseball League this season.

Teams from Mansfield, Orangeville, Barrie, Caledon, Creemore, Georgina, Midland, and Orillia will battle it out on the diamonds this summer.

Teams will play a 14 game regular season before heading into the playoffs.

The Bengals will play their home opener on Sunday, May 15, at Springbrook Park in Orangeville when they will host the Orillia Royals.

Game time is 4:00 p.m.
