A local musician and author, who’s best known riding around Orangeville on a red scooter with his dog in the sidecar, recently released a new children’s book that is quite literally out of this world.
Wayne Sumbler launched the third installment of his Auston the SidecarDog book series on Dec. 6, and it’s taking readers on a journey through the solar system.
Fittingly titled Auston the Sidecar Dog In Outer Space, colourful images illustrated by M.K. Komins show Sumbler and his dog exiting Earth and reaching for the stars.
The first book of the series, Auston the Sidecar Dog Saves Christmas, takes readers on a journey around the world, through places like Paris, London, Panama and New York City.
The second book, Auston the Sidecar Dog Saves a Whale, takes readers across Canada, as Sumbler and his dog endeavour to save a beached pregnant Orca.
“After that, I thought there’s only one place we haven’t been to yet – and that is space,” he said.
Sumbler told the Citizen he hopes the book piques young readers’ interest in outer space.
“It’s for young children, so they can look at careers as astronauts or working in the space industry, which Canadians are great at,” said Sumbler, who noted that many astronauts are Canadian, such as Chris Hadfield and Jeremy Hansen.
“That’s the biggest thing, and to teach them that there’s more than just the Earth. We’ve got a whole universe.”
Sumbler told the Citizen the book’s illustrations really tie it together and make it a stimulating read.
“It’s a wonderful book for children, and they’re going to love the illustrations and the poetry in it,” he said.
Sumbler’s writing career began in 2021 when he released his first book, Sex, Drugs and Pots & Pans. Since then he started the Auston the Sidecar Dog series and has plans for additional books in the future.
Auston the Sidecar Dog In Outer Space is available at Booklore in Orangeville and all of Sumbler’s books are available for purchase through Amazon.ca.
