There was some good defence on both sides during Friday (June 24) night’s Junior North Dufferin Baseball League game between the Orangeville Bengals and the Mansfield Cubs.
The result was a low scoring game with good hitting, few errors, and a good pace on the diamond.
The Cubs scored early in the first inning when Jack Sinclair got on base with a hit to shallow centre then made it to third on a hit from Dale Critchley.
Adam Sutowski followed up with a hit to bring in the first run of the game.
The Cubs tied the game at one, in the top of the second.
The Bengals were ahead by a run when Brady Janes hit deep to put men on first and third, and the next hit brought a player across home plate.
It was a 3-1 game in the fourth when Noah McDonald hit deep to centre field to bring in a run.
The Cubs had a good fifth inning when they brought in a couple of runs to again tie the game.
The Bengals had some good batting in the rest of the inning but couldn’t score. They dropped behind by a single run when Mansfield scored to take the lead.
Orangeville shut the Mansfield offence down in the sixth inning to stop their momentum, but they couldn’t get any runs to tie it up and take the lead.
The game ended on a tag-out at third base.
Final was a 4-3 win for the Cubs.
The loss brings the Bengals record to 4-4-1 with five games remaining on the regular season schedule.
The Cubs remaining games for the regular season will all be on the road including a double header with the Midland Twins in July 3.
The Orillia Royals are currently in first place in the Junior division followed by the Caledon Nationals and the Mansfield Cubs.
