The Orangeville District Secondary School Bears senior girls basketball gave up a loss to Centennial Collegiate on Tuesday, Oct. 10, after a hard-fought battle between the two top teams in District 10.
Both the Bears and the Centennial Collegiate V.I. Spartans from Guelph came to Tuesday’s game as undefeated teams with 6-0 records.
A win would place one of the teams in first place in the District standings.
It was a highly charged, fast-paced game that saw a close score through all four quarters.
A large contingent of enthusiastic and vocal fans were in the stands, which added a lot of excitement for those who came out to watch this fight for first place.
The Bears had a few setbacks when they lost three key players to on-court injuries during the game.
The final quarter found the Bears trailing by eight points and putting up a strong effort to close the gap. However, the Spartans managed to stay in the lead and then hit a few hoops, including a final three-pointer, to leave the court with a 62-46 win.
“In practice we were pushing each other more, and getting prepared for a lot of off-ball movement from Centennial’s two big players,” said Bears point guard Ayla Corrigale of how the team prepared for the game. “As team, we were more prepared coming into this game.”
The Bears played well both on offence and defence.
“We shot well, but finishing up in the net was a struggle,” Ayla said. “I thought we did really well on just staying positive – we all did well for a tough game. Our man-to-man defence worked and we were controlling our match-ups really well. I think we need to work on switching screens, always communicating, and always talking, and working on our switches. We had three injuries during the game. Two of our starters got injured. That may have made all the difference, but injuries can happen.”
The Bears will be back on their home court on Tuesday, Oct. 24, when they will host Centre Wellington District High School.
The tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
