It was a tough opening game for the Orangeville District Secondary School Bears junior basketball team, but when the final buzzer sounded the Bears claimed their first win of the season over the St. James Lions.

The ODSS team stayed ahead for most of the game but had to fend off a late game comeback when the St. James team challenged in the fourth quarter then came to within a point of tying the game.

The Bears took an early lead going ahead 23-15 in the second quarter with some good offensive posturing.

They ended the half with a ten point lead when Gregor Lawson hit the hoop on two free throws with seconds remaining on the clock.

The second half started with Keelan Steele scoring then following up with a successful free-throw.

The Bears were consistent on the court through the third quarter with some aggressive play by Eric Cole, Damien Hayne, Cole Purdell-Lewis, Wade Bergen, and Andrew Poolucci.

Going into the fourth quarter the Lions put out a huge effort that saw them close the gap to three points then come within a point of tying it up.

The ODSS squad managed to stay ahead in the final minute.

The game ended with a one-point free throw from Poolucci and a 44-39

win for the Bears.

“We have to hustle. Close in on the ball, hands up all the time,” summed up Bears forward Keelan Steele. “I thought we were playing good but we

can always do better. That (today) was just the start. We can do a lot more than that. In practice we do a lot of running, get the endurance up, work on stamina. We’re working on plays in practice – cutting to the rim, one cuts, two cuts.”

The Bears second game of the season resulted in a loss after a pretty in

tense and high scoring game against Guelph Collegiate.

The Bears missed out by three points taking a 68-65 loss to Guelph.

The Bears juniors will be back on their home court at ODSS on Tuesday, December 11, when they host Centre Wellington District High School.

Game time is 5:15 p.m.
