The Orangeville Bears advanced to the semi-final round in the District 4 / 10 playoffs after blanking Guelph Collegiate in their quarter-final game at Tony Rose arena on Thursday, February 20.
Around 300 students and parents filled the arena to watch the game.
After playing with no scoring for most of the first period, Bears forward Andy Whitton let a shot go from just inside the blue line that found the back of the Guelph net.
Whitton got the hattrick in the second period with two more goals that gave the Bear a 3 – 0 lead.
When the teams returned for the third period, it was obvious the Bears had their number and dominated for the final frame.
ODSS managed to score three more goals in the third period.
Bears goals came from Evan Doerfler, Leighton Cooke, and Ben Ferguson.
“I think at the start we got going early then we came out strong in the second half of the second period,” summed up Bears centre, Evan Doerfler, after the game. “We wanted to bury them right away. It was 3 – 0 so we wanted to take advantage of what we had, and I think we did a good job of that.”
The fact that they didn’t allow a single goal against in a playoff game points to good defensive work by the Bears.
“I think our goal tender had a lot to do with that,” Doerfler said. “He got a shut-out, he earned it. He played really well.”
The Bears will now face Norwell District Secondary School in the semi-final game.
Norwell won their quarter-final 5 -1 over Wellington Heights Secondary School.
The other semi-final game will match John F. Ross from Guelph with Centre Dufferin District High School from Shelburne.
The ODSS / Norwell semi-final is scheduled to be played at Tony Rose arena on Thursday, February 27.
Game time is 2:00p.m.
