Last week’s election of Donald Trump as the next president of the United States has many people concerned, but Dufferin-Caledon MP David Tilson is willing to see how events play out.
“It was certainly one of the most controversial presidential races that the planet has ever seen,” Mr. Tilson remarked Monday.
He added he was reluctant to comment on what the new president might do, pointing out that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said he’s prepared to meet with Mr. Trump to discuss things like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
“Mr. Trump said some very strong things in the campaign that could affect Canada,” Mr. Tilson said, adding that his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton did too, pointing out a lot of things are said in the heat of a campaign. “I’m reluctant to diss him.”
He added the U.S. has always been a good ally of Canada, and he hopes that will continue.
Mr. Tilson did say he was surprised at how decisive Mr. Trump’s victory was.
“He didn’t just win,” Mr. Tilson observed. “He walloped her!”
He also pointed out the polls and media got it wrong.
“It shows the division in the United States,” he remarked.
Mr. Tilson also said the results showed a lot of dislike for Ms. Clinton. According to media accounts he’s seen, it looks like a lot of Democrats didn’t vote.
“Whether that was anti-Clinton or anti-both-of-them, I just don’t know.”
