Anyone who loves to sing and possess some level of music-reading skill is invited to join the Achill Choral Society, an Orangeville-based community choir with a history spanning more than four decades.

Three open rehearsals are being conducted by the choir in September, and all are invited to see if they’d like to become members.

The Achill Choral Society will soon begin practicing for their winter concert, working on a list of selections ranging from Stompin’ Tom Connors’ “The Hockey Song” to more traditional seasonal fare.

Individuals interested in learning more are welcome to attend open rehearsals on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 16 and 23, each running from 7 to 9 p.m. at Orangeville’s Westminster United Church. Following the open rehearsals, those interested in joining will be given a vocal assessment for the purposes of placement only.

“There is nothing more rewarding than singing in a choir,” says Achill Choral Society President Susan Allen, “from a social standpoint and even from a spiritual one. And it’s also fun.”

After being led for nine seasons by conductor Shawn Grenke, choir members are also really excited to begin the next stage of their musical journey.

“We’re thrilled to invite our new artistic director Emily Taub to the podium this fall,” says Allen.

Taub is founder and artistic director of “Choir à La Mode” and she performs with several ensembles, including Elmer Isler Singers. She is a sought-after composer and arranger.

“We’re really excited by the new direction under her leadership,” says Allen.  “What a great time to consider joining us.”

For more information, visit achill.ca or simply show up to Westminster United Church on Wednesday, Sept. 9 for the first rehearsal of the season.
