It didn’t take local boxer, Jake Daoust, very long to finish his fourth pro bout in Cape Breton on May 7.

Daoust delivered an uppercut at 44 seconds into the second round that dropped his opponent to the canvas and the middleweight fight was over.

His opponent, Juan Adrian Monzon, fighting out of Campana, Buenos Aires, Argentina, came to the ring with an 8-3-3 record, winning seven of those fights with a knockout.

Daoust knocked Monzon to the canvas in the first round. Monzon managed to get up and take the standing eight count, but it was obvious that he was struggling and when the bell rang start the second round, Daoust moved in to finish it off.

It has been less than two months after he won his third bout on March 19, in Hamilton, but Daoust said he is eager to keep fighting.

“At this stage in my career I’d like to get as busy as possible,” he said. “I didn’t get much rest, but that’s okay, I felt good going in there. I was in really good shape.”

Daoust said he was prepared to go up against an experienced opponent.

“I knew he had a winning record of eight wins, three losses and three draws, and that seven of his wins were by knockouts so I knew he could punch and he had a lot of experience. My game plan was to use my jab and bodywork in the first round – which I did. I put him down in the first round and in the second I think I was overwhelming, and I landed a big uppercut and he went down. It was my fourth fight, it ended in 44 seconds, and it was on my 24th birthday.”

Daoust took a couple of days off to rest but is already back in the gym to keep in shape.

“I’m back in the gym,” he said. “I had a two day rest, and I’ll be ready for a call for anything that’s coming up. It’s going to be go, go, go, until I get a title shot.”

The win means Daoust’s professional record is now 4-0.
