BUDGET-WISE it may well be another case, as Yogi Berra once said, of “Déjà vu all over again.”
Word out of Queen’s Park is that Ontario’s Liberal government insists it’s on track to balance its budget in 2017-18, in time for the next provincial election.
But Vic Fedeli, Progressive Conservative Finance critic, predicts the government is going to balance things through the one-time sale of assets, with more deficits to follow.
“This confirms what we’ve been saying for months,” he said. “The government is using one-time money from asset sales, contingency funds and tax increases to artificially balance the budget in an election year.”
If so, the move will mirror that of the PCs in the days of the Mike Harris government, when they balanced the budget by selling off Highway 407. Remember?
