The Orangeville Junior B Northmen shut down the Six Nations Rebels with a 9-2 win Monday (May 9) night at the Alder Street arena.
It was the fifth win for the Northmen this season.
The Northmen were quick to tame the Rebels scoring three unanswered first period goals from Shane Hillis, Scott Del Zotto, and Grayson Houghton.
Pushing on in the second frame the Orangeville squad extended their lead to five on two more goals from Hillis and Ben Mercey.
They also manage to kill ten minutes in penalty kills included a five on three situation.
Kyles Waters scored a late period goal to make it a 6-2 game going into the third period.
Returning for the final frame the the Northmen kept up the pressure for the duration and outscored the Rebels 3-1 to take the game 9-2.
It was the Six Nations team’s first loss of the season.
The win places the Northmen in first place in their division and tied for second over all in the 25 team League.
Third period Orangevill goals came from Del Zotto, Kyler Waters, and Malcolm Young.
“We made a lot of great efforts tonight starting with our goaltender (Rylan Hartley). I think he was the difference, especially early on when the really took the play to us,” said Northmen coach Bruce Codd. “He was great tonight. We gave up a lot of powerplay opportunities, our short-man was really good. We had a lot of things go our way, they hit some posts and things like that, but I’m happy with the effort.”
The Northmen ran into some penalty trouble in the second but managed to stave on a five-on-three situation.
“In a five-on-three, the one guy who’s critical is the goaltender and Rylan did an excellent job on those penalty kills,” Codd said.
The Six Nations team is in a different Division of the League so this is the only time the two teams will meet in the regular season.
“The one thing about this is if you don’t play them again, you won’t get another chance to put a dent in their record. This is the one shot we got so we wanted to make sure that we were as good as we possibly could be. This was our once chance and we wanted to make good on it and I’m happy with the way the guys responded to that.”
The Junior B Northmen will be back in action this Saturday (May 14) night when the host the Wallaceburg Red Devils at the Alder Street arena.
Game time is 7:00 p.m.
