The Friends of Island Lake (FOIL) held theirannual Spring Trail Donation Day on Saturday, May 28 and raised $5,600 in support Island Lake’s Storybook Walk Project and the 12th Annual Bass Derby Tournament.
“Trail Donation Day was a great opportunity for the whole community to come out and support the park,” said Kim Prince, Executive Director, CVCF. “This year, funds raised will support our Storybook Walk Project, the latest infrastructure project at Island Lake Conservation Area and the upcoming Bass Derby Tournament. We are so fortunate to have the Friends of Island Lake out in the community promoting the work of CVC and raising funds for our Foundation.”
The Storybook Walk Project will be a fun, interactive and educational activity that places the pages from a children’s book along the trail. This will be a new addition to the natural playground feature, which is FOIL’s fundraising project of 2021.
The 12th Annual Bass Derby event will take place on July 16 and 17. Approximately 300 anglers take part in the event to compete for their chance to win cash prizes by bringing in the largest fish. The Bass Derby raises funds for improvements to the trails and conservation projects at Island Lake Conservation Area.
“It was another successful Trail Donation Day at Island Lake Conservation Area! Many thanks to all of the FOIL volunteers and those who generously donated,” said Mayor Sandy Brown, who volunteered at the event.
Since 2005, FOIL has raised over $2.6 million in donations, constructed more than 10 kilometres of fully accessible trail and volunteered over 10,000 hours annually toward park projects.
The trails at Island Lake Conservation Area help connect the municipalities of Orangeville and Mono. The number of people visiting Island Lake Conservation Area has increased significantly since July 2015 when the last bridges were installed on the Vicki Barron Lakeside Trail, creating a full trail loop around Island Lake. Last year approximately 347,000 people visited the park.
