The Dufferin Women in Business (DWIB), a committee of the Dufferin Board of Trade, has presented a cheque for $1,044.28 to the Orangeville Food Bank. The funds were raised through ticket sales at the Business Women Giving Back event held on January 17 and presented at the food bank on April 5th.
The Business Women Giving Back event was held at the Orangeville Food Bank where 45 attendees were given a tour of the food bank with an inside look at the logistics and planning behind operations.
The Food Bank was at capacity as tickets were sold out. Attendees learned of the importance of having a food bank in the community and about the realities of poverty in Dufferin County. The DWIB committee prepared and donated lunch for the guests.
“Poverty in Dufferin is often hidden, but this issue is far more prevalent than we tend to think” says Liz Skorski, Chair of DWIB. “We are so glad that we had the opportunity to showcase the amazing work being done at the Orangeville Food Bank and to bring together influential women in our business community to raise money and awareness for this important cause.”
In the Orangeville Food Bank’s last fiscal year, they served 4300 people – approximately 1150 families and 500 singles – an increase of 7% in family use over the previous year. In addition, the Food Bank took in 141,000 pounds in community donations, local grocery bin collections and food drives as well as from their hub in Waterloo.
The Dufferin Women in Business will be hosting their next event on April 18th – Women ‘’n’ Wheels. Visit dwib.ca for more information.
