The 2016 Dufferin Relay for Life will take place this Saturday, June 18, at the Orangeville Agricultural Fairgrounds.
Although, the event will be sharing the grounds with Ram Rodeo, Dufferin Relay team coordinator Terry Dole says that’s not a problem.
“Most of our fundraising is done months in advance of the event,” said Ms. Dole, “and our event is not open to spectators.”
She told The Citizen that Relay organizers have worked with Ram Rodeo to coordinate both events and although Relay for Life participants will be able to hear the Rodeo, the two events should have no problem sharing the 500 acres of Fairgrounds.
This is Dufferin’s sixth annual relay event at the fairgrounds. Running this year from noon to midnight, it has raised over $500,000 for research for the Canadian Cancer Society since it began.
The relay is walked on a track at the fairgrounds with the outside perimeter lined in campsites decorated in team colours and themes. The inside of the track holds family activities and games, including a bouncy castle, volleyball, face painting, and an arts and crafts area, as well as a stage for ceremonies and bands.
The day is filled “with shared stories, tears, laughs, games, food, family and friends,” said Ms. Dole. A luminary ceremony, where the luminaries are purchased “in memory of loved ones that have both fought and won and those who have fought and lost their cancer battles,” lights the track for the night “as we walk and reflect on our memories,” she added.
