The Cruisin’ on First Car Show started the summer season by getting everyone in the mood for some 50’s nostalgia.
The weekly show had its first night on Wednesday, May 22, in the Canadian Tire parking lot in Orangeville. Special guests for opening night were the cast of Grease from Orangeville Music Theatre who performed some songs from the show. With cloudy skies and little bit of rain, some owners were reluctant to make the trek, but eventually the cars started rolling in.
The show is sponsored by MacMaster Buick GMC and Orangeville Chrysler.
“We had a good response before the show but the rain is keeping some people away,” said organizer David Murphy. “It’s hard to put a number on how many will show up.”
Typically the show gets around 250 cars on a nice evening. Everything from classic roadsters to 70’s muscle cars show up to give the public a chance to see their cars.
John Bitar from Advanced Auto Electric brought his 1971 Chevelle, a car he says he drives on a regular basis.
“We support this event, it’s very nice,” Mr. Bitar said. “I live on a dirt road and I drive this every day on the dirt road in the summer. This is a ’71 Chevelle. It’s our third season with it. We brought it from P.E.I. We went there and got it and brought it back. It used to be orange and black. Since then we took it part into pieces. It was in boxes. We started rebuilding it and putting it together and now its ready to show. It was in decent shape but everything was worn out and tired.”
Mr. Bitar and his team refurbished the car and had the engine bored out and rebuilt.
He repainted the car a dark grey.
“I wanted a colour that wasn’t flashy,” he explained. “Something subtle and neutral.”
Throughout the summer the car show has special theme nights which bring out a variety of different vehicles, although anyone with a custom or modified car is still welcome to come out and show their vehicle and meet with the many people who attend each week.
The Cruisin’ on First Car Show takes place every Wednesday night through the summer at the Canadian Tire Parking lot in Orangeville beginning at 6:00 p.m.
