The fact that the bowling alley in Orangeville closed a few years ago never stopped Big Brother Big Sisters of Dufferin and District from continuing with their annual Bowl for Kids sake.

They just moved from the alley to a virtual setting using Wii bowling.

This is the 40th year the will be holding this annual event. It is a main fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Four decades ago they started the event at a local Orangeville bowling alley, but when it shut its doors they decided to substitute a computer-simulated bowling alley and it turned out to be a big hit with participants.

The organization will hold its annual Bowl for Kids Sake breakfast launch at the Best Western Inn in Orangeville this Friday, February 28.

It is an opportunity to get supporters geared up for the Bowl for Kids Sake event and learn more about what Big Brothers Big Sisters accomplishes in the community.

There will be a short presentation and some words from some of the kids and volunteers involved in the program.

“We have 25 teams signed up so far,” said Nancy Stallmach, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dufferin and District executive director. “We hope to have around 300 to 350 people come out. We will have 14 Wii stations set up. It’s out biggest fundraiser – we make more than a third of our budget from this event. Our two biggest sponsors this year are Clorox and IG Financial.”

Wii bowling allows players to bowl on a screen with timing, ball delivery, and putting a spin on the ball to get a strike, just like the real thing. Visitors have a great time during the event.

“Big Brothers Big Sisters match children with caring mentors that have a positive affect on their lives,” Ms. Stallmach said. “We also have school based one-on-one programs. We’re in schools in Dufferin County, Hillsburgh, and some of the outlying adjacent areas. Bowl for Kids Sake really helps us stay in operation.”

This year Bowl for Kids Sake will take place on Friday, March 27, and Sunday, March 29, at the Best Western Inn and Suites in Orangeville.
