Will the saving be costly?

DUFFERIN COUNTY council’s awarding of a minimum three-year contract to handle 911 calls to Sudbury-based Northern911 was a no-brainer, in that the request-for-proposals process followed led to a $70,000 saving next year alone.
However, there undoubtedly will be concern among local residents that having 911 calls answered by operators that far away will produce a delay in the arrival of potentially life-saving services, be they paramedics, fire fighters or police officers.
We are assured by the County that the involvement of Northern911 is merely to answer the calls and determine which of the police, fire or ambulance services is required and thus any delay should be a matter of seconds.
However, Amaranth CAO/Clerk Susan Stone was correct in observing that even a matter of a few seconds could, in some cases, mean the difference between life and death.
